Leamington 10 - 29 Newbold 2XV
After a long break due to Xmas and the poor weather, the Newbold 2nds travelled to Leamington chasing their first league win of the season. Strong numbers, (6 on the bench) and a good warm up set the Bold up for a good game, further strengthened by Leamington's inability to field a full team.
R. McCulloch, M. Phillips and later on J. Henry helped out the home side and put in strong performances, but Newbold's new found energy after a long lay off and positive team spirit set them up for a convincing victory. Some good pressure from the start resulted in an early try from M. Bullock, followed by a counter try, 5-5. A. Borg and K. Mills added two more, 19-5 before half time. J. Marney and M. Dymek worked well together in the back row and led the pack through some good ground making play.
After the half way Leamington ran in a second, but M. Wade, T. Clark and A. Borg stretched the Boldy lead to make it 29-10. Newbold took their foot off the gas in the final moments, but held out for a well deserved victory away from home, their first of the season.
Next week sees the 2's welcome local rivals Old Laurentians to Parkfield Road. In the earlier fixture the game was abandoned at half time after Newbold travelled to OL's with only 15 young players and lost 5 to injury early on. Hopefully this time it will be different.
