Spartans 3rds -17 V Newbold Vets - 45

Newbold vets showed strength in depth by being able to field a much changed team, which will be vital as a tough season progresses.

From the start, the Bold were under pressure from the set pieces, something that they have not been used to this season in their unbeaten league campaign. Shunted back time after time, it was a surprise when the ball broke for youngster Sean Fereday to gallop away to score against the run of play. This theme continued, and Gasman did the same after a mistake was pounced on by the marauding Bold back row of Bale, Fereday and Plumb.

Well built Carl Platt at fly-half tried hard, but continued to slow the ball down further, however this didnt deter the rest of the backline as Fereday ran in for his 2nd try. Settling into some rhythm, Bishy Bale standing in as skipper for the injured Snowy, fed what ball he did get excellently as the Bold back line looked sharp and threatening. Spartans pressure resulted in one try, but the half time score of 19 -7 meant there was still work to be done. Bale called for extra effort and tighter scrums led to quicker ball to the very strong Silvi Marsella, who ghosted through the home defence for 2 superbly taken scores and made the game safe for the Parkfield Rd boys.

Certainly, deserving of his man of the match award. James Brainwood, continued his run of scores with a try after some slick passing though the back line. Spot Mcgill scored after a kick through and went over for a well taken try and Mark Groocock did something very similar a few minutes later. Paul Love returned to the vets team after a short transfer to the Welsh, as the recent tour experiences showed him what he was missing. 4 conversions by Davies and 1 by Brainwood resulted in a final scoreline of 45-17, another fine, hard working display by the vets team.

Thats 5 league wins out of 5, Newbold will be looking to continue their fine vein of form against Old Coventrians at home this Saturday.
