Newbold Vets - Season Review 2008/09

Bold Vets were crowned champions of Warwickshire League 4 at the end of a very enjoyable and successful season. Bold remained unbeaten in the league until the penultimate game against Kersley and only came unstuck after a valiant effort against what can only be described as a mixture of the home side’s first team and colts.

The season’s statistics were: played 24, won 20 and lost 4. Points for 844, against 296. Newcomer James Brainwood topped the try table with a credible 21 scores, followed closely by wingmen Gasman and Stick with 15 and 11 respectively.

Notable victories included the double over Barkers Butts, who were confident of winning the league themselves, and a monumental effort away at Alcester when, once again, Bold found themselves pitted against the majority of the first team.

The season came to a satisfying end with a four day trip to the Algarve with a party of 43 tourists. Bold Vets played against Birmingham based Old Saltleians who were also on tour at the same time and, coincidentally, sharing the same Hotel.

Old Salts fielded a youthful team which consisted mainly of 1st and 2nd team players and, although Bold were in touch at 15-10 at half time, the brummie side ran out clear victors in the second half as tired old legs ran out of steam and the previous 48hours alcohol kicked in.

Finally, six of the Bold squad were chosen to represent a Warwickshire Vets team in a charity match against a referee select side last weekend and helped to secure a closely fought 29-26 victory.
